Meet The Dering Family
Welcome to "Hopecrest Cotons". We are not a kennel. We are a Morgantown, WV family of 5 with our dogs. Our name comes from our lovely neighborhood, "Hopecrest", which is perched at the top of a hill in Morgantown's historic South Park.
Our dogs are pets in our home and the only time they see a cage, crate or x-pen is at night at bedtime or when we are running errands. The rest of the time they are running around the house, outside on our gated, covered back porch, curled up in the sunroom with a ray of sunshine warming them through the french doors, or running in our walled back yard.
My husband, Alex, is a retired executive from the HVAC industry and I have dedicated myself to breeding and showing our dogs while raising our three children.
Our youngest will be headed off to college in fall of 2024, and have had Cotons since he was still in diapers! The Dering children have actively shown our dogs though the years and were always excited to travel with mom to a new place! Part of the fun of summer was packing up and seeing what town we will show in next!
Athough I have finished the majority of our dogs as champions myself, we have also relied on professional handler Harry Bennett for over a decade to pitch in when needed and show our champions into the rankings. Harry has been like family and we know our dogs receive the same level of care and affection with him that they do here at home! Harry, with his vast experience and accomplishments in AKC has also been a wonderful educator and voice for the Coton as we entered the Non-Sporting group in 2014!
For many years we traveled all over the US and Europe to chase the big entries and compete with the best of the best! We had the top AKC Coton in 2013, 2014 and 2015... We started 2016 with Elvis in Number 1 until August when unforeseen circumstances cut his 2016 special career short. His daughter Mimi was #1 in 2017 and 2018! We we have two Crufts Best of Breed Winners and two Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Winners! A National Dog Show Best of Breed Winner, an AKC National Championship Best of Breed Winner, a Best of Opposite winner, and 2 Best of Breed National Owner Handled Series winners!
In recent years we have stopped chasing the rankings as much and have focused more on showing our individual dogs to their championships ourselves and attending shows with friends. We added the Biewer Terrier to our home in 2018 and have since bred several champions in that breed as well. In December 2023 we added Tessa, a Logatto Romangnolo, to our home as a family pet and will also be showing her in AKC.
At Hopecrest we believe that all dogs should be cherished and showered with individual attention. That is why we keep the number of dogs who live with us to a minimum. Cotons and Biewers are Companion breeds. We believe that keeping our numbers low insures that each addition to our family has adequate training, grooming, attention, and acclimation into our household pack.
In order to insure a viable breeding program while keeping our number of dogs low, we rely on a network of other established breeders to partner with for genetic diversity as well as the partnership of guardian homes for our dogs where they can enjoy a life as a family pet while still being a part of our breeding or showing family.
In addition to puppies, older puppies or adults may be available at times after retiring from breeding or showing, or to guardian homes to be partnered with while they are still actively exhibiting or used for breeding. If this is something that might interest you, please feel free to reach out to us.
In anticipation of our empty nest, we have purchased a condo in downtown Orlando and are happy to arrange delivery or pickup in that location as well as our primary Morgantown home.
I am blessed to have a full life and I am SO HAPPY that I have the opportunity to share these breeds with you and your family! I hope that your Hopecrest puppy adds as much joy and love to your lives as they have ours!
